Principality of San Bartolomeo
The Title of Prince of San Bartolomeo was granted by HM King Charles II of Spain, Naples, Sicily and Sardinia , to Domenico Oneto Spataforma Olivera, and to his heirs and successors, more Francorum, through a Diploma granted in Madrid on September 6, 1682, recognized and executed in the kingdom on November 20, 1682 (Palermo State Archive – Conservatoria di Registro, reg.424, aa.1682-83-84, cc,6- 8).
The Oneto Family, originally from Genoa, where it was registered in the Golden Book of that city. It passed to Sicily in the person of Giovan Stefano who, in 1656, acquired the barony of Sperlinga, with a privilege granted on April 2 and recognized and executed on July 20, 1658, obtaining the Title of Marquis of San Niccolo de Laurateo. ; with a privilege granted on April 30, 1666, recognized and executed on June 22, 1667, he obtained the Title of Duke of San Silvestre, which by means of patrimonial charters dated June 30, 1667, was established over Sperlinga; He subsequently acquired the fiefdoms of Vescara and Cicera from the spouses Giuseppe and Maria Lanza, Princes of San Stefano, being invested with them on June 23, 1674; acquired the Barony of Carrubba and there he was invested, on May 20, 1678, with the Barony of San Bartolomeo and Belize. He was Governor of the Monte de Piedad of Palermo in the years 1673, 1677, 1678 and married Olivia Spadafora, daughter of Vincenzo Spadafora.
Giovan Tommaso, through a privilege granted in Madrid on October 14, recognized and executed in Palermo on November 27, 1697, obtained the title of Prince of San Lorenzo and married Eleonora Beccadelli di Bologna, of the Princes of Sabuci.
Giovan Stefano and Giovan Tommaso were thus the predecessors of the two branches of this noble family in Sicily, that of the Dukes of Sperlinga (later Princes of San Bartolomeo) and that of the Princes of San Lorenzo.
Following the Sperlinga branch, it can be seen specifically that Domenico Oneto y Spatafora, son of Giovan Stefano, obtained through a privilege granted in Madrid on March 17, 1682 the ratification of the acquisition that his father he had made in 1679 to the Royal Court, of the lands and the estate of Francavilla, already of the late Carlo Ruffo, son of Pietro, rebel from Messina. On April 4, 1680, he received the investiture of Sperlinga, Vescara, Cicera, Carrubba, and by virtue of the privilege dated August 24, 1682, he obtained the title of Viscount of Francavilla. Finally, and by virtue of a privilege dated September 6, 1682, recognized and executed on November 20, 1682, he obtained the title of Prince of San Bartolomeo.
Domenico Oneto married Caterina Valguarnera y Corvino, daughter of Francesco, Baron del Pozzo and Maria Corvino. He was a donee of the mother Olivia Spadafora Olivera, Duchess of Sperlinga, in the deeds of the notary of Palermo Stefano Sabella, dated July 16, 1682. He was Viscount of Francavilla, by investiture dated April 4, 1680 and Governor in Palermo of the Campagnia de Bianchi in 1685. He died without issue.
Francesco Oneto Spadafora was invested on June 25, 1698, due to the death without issue of the aforementioned Domenico, his brother (R. Canc. 1697-98, f.347). He married Girolama Valguarnera Corvino, sister of the former. He died in 1710. His testament is incorporated in the protocol of the notary of Palermo Luigi Ferdinando Vasta, on March 28, 1710.
Giovanni Stefano Oneto Valguarnera was invested on October 27, 1710, as the eldest son and due to the death of Francesco, his father (Con. Reg. Inv. Book years 1709-10, f.20 retro). He married Rosalía Morrele Varguarnera, daughter of Giuseppe, Duke of Castrofilippo and Ippolta Valguarnera Branciforti (Niscemi). In 1734 he was Captain of Justice in Palermo. He acquired from Emmanuele Lucchese, Prince of Campofranco, with Royal Word and Shield of Perpetual Safeguarding, the Barony of Racalmallima. The deed was authorized by the notary of Palermo Francesco Taulio, on June 17, 1711. His testament is recorded in the protocol of the notary of Palermo Giuseppe Magilocco, and was published on August 28, 1746. He died there, on August 23 of that year, as can be seen from the certificate issued by the Parish of San Antonio Abad. The Princess died in Palermo at the age of 85 on March 16, 1783. She was buried in the abbey of Le Cappuccionelle (D Marzo, Bibl. St. E Lett, Vol. 17, p. 43 and vol28, p.38 )
Francesco Oneto Morreale was invested, on September 17, 1746, in his capacity as first-born son and due to the death of the aforementioned Giovanni Stefano and his brother, by virtue of a will that is authorized in the protocol of the notary of Palermo Giovanni Magilocco, dated July 22, 1746, published on the 28th of the following August. On the same date he was invested with the Barony of San Bartolomeo (Cons. Di Reg., book years 1747-49, f. 48 retro and 52 retro). He married Stefania Gravina Moncada, daughter of Girolarno, Prince of Montellegro and Caterina Moncada Ventimgila (San Giovanni). In 1757 he was Governor of the Biachi in Palermo. He died there, on January 21, 1780, at the age of 58, as can be seen from the certificate issued by the Parish of San Niccolo la Falsa. He is buried in San Domenico (Di Marco, loco cit., Vol 27, page 23). Princess Stefania died in Palermo on December 8, 1781. She was buried in the abbey of Le Cappuccionelle (Di Marzo, loco cit., Vol.17, p.23)
Saverio Oneto Gravina was invested, on January 23, 1782, in the title of Prince and in the Barony of San Bartolomeo, in his capacity as eldest son and due to the death of the aforementioned Francesco, his father and his universal heir by virtue will open and made public by the notary of Palermo Andrea Lo Cicero on June 27, 1780 (Cons. Libro Inv., 1781-84, f. 69-79) Born in Palermo in 1762. Married in Palermo on the 7 July 1779 with Aloisia Lanza, daughter of Giuseppe, Prince of Trabia and Caterina Branciforte. In 1782 he was gentleman of the Chamber and Superior of the Palermo Charity Campaign. Armed at his expense an Infantry Regiment, of which he was Colonel. He died in Palermo on June 1, 1782, as can be seen from the certificate issued by the Cathedral.
Giuseppe Oneto Lanza, Duke of Sperlinga, was invested with the Title of Prince of San Bartolomeo on December 4, 1811, as the second son of Saverio, and his universal heir by virtue of a will made public by the notary of Palermo. Pietro Anelli on June 8, 1811. On the same date he was invested with the Barony and the fiefdom of San Bartolomeo and Belize, located in Sciacca; and this for the same reason (Palermo State Archive, Conservatoria di Registro, reg. 1188, year 1806-12, cc, 62-64)
He succeeded his father, Saverio Oneto y Gravina, on his death, as the second son, given that the eldest son, Francesco, died as a child on December 2, 1787. He married Aurora Monroy, 23 years old old, daughter of Ferdinando, Prince of Pandolfina and Anna Riccio and Riccio (Parish of Kalsa, 1802) (From the work: La Stori dei Feudi e dei Titoli Nobiliaridi Sicilia – Letter Francesco San Martino De Spucches – Palermo, 1931. Volume VII, Cuado 873, in writing) The couple had no offspring.
The family is generically registered with the titles indicated above in the Official Nobiliary List of the Kingdom of Italy of 1922.
From 1682 to 1811 the Title of Prince of San Bartolomeo remained in the Oneto family. From 1811 to the present day it remains in the Andújar family, being the first to hold this title D. Juan Andújar.
